The couch in my room, I'm trying to puzzle out a blanket for it.

[She's never hungry, Derek, but she pops - pop! - into the kitchen.]

[ it takes derek a little longer, but he gets there. look annie, derek doesn't know how ghosts work. maybe you guys get hungry, how should he know? ]

I can make sandwiches.

[ in lieu of actual greeting, though food isn't really why derek asked her to meet him here. ]

[She's already making tea, because it's calming and sometimes things like this have her worry. She's pouring him a mug and herself a mug of hot water she can hold and pretend is tea.]

If you like. I made you cup.

[She pushes it towards him, very gently.]

[ derek's tastes run more towards black coffee, no sweeteners or creams. but he always drinks the tea annie makes. he takes it, links his fingers through the handle but doesn't sip from it. ]

Does Mitchell have a problem with werewolves?

[ segue what segue. ]

[She looks at him for a long moment, and then down, and then away. This is Mitchell's business, she shouldn't be talking about it.]

Well, he's flatmates with George, isn't he?

[She knows how stupid that sounds. She might not have been victim to much racism, not the angry bitter kind, but she's heard that I can't be racist, you're my friend, aren't you and she knows exactly what that sounds like.]

[ derek's expression tightens. he didn't come here to argue with annie, but he'd like to argue the point, that one werewolf doesn't-- ]

I need to know if he's dangerous. If he's going to be a threat to people I know.

[ this isn't really a problem for scott or isaac or cora, but arya's another story entirely. if mitchell had reacted badly to her just smelling of wolves, then that was a problem. ]

Dangerous? To who? He's not dangerous!

[She says it with a little hysteria in her voice, like maybe she's trying to convince herself more than Derek.]

He doesn't even drink blood!

[ derek's grip tightens on the cup, and he lifts his hands away. ]

He's not safe.

[ maybe not dangerous, but mitchell isn't safe. it's a careful distinction derek's making. ]

Are you?

Safe?

[She asks that with the utmost confidence that, no, he isn't.]

I'm not out there scaring little girls because they smell like wolves.

[ answering around the question like a champ. though arya would guy him several times over if she ever knew derek had phrased it like that. ]

Mitchell loves children!

[He does!

But she runs her hands through her hair, and maybe it's stress, or maybe this has been building.]

Everyone thinks he's so bad, it makes it so hard for him when no one believes he's good.

Not if they smell like wolves, apparently.

[ bluntly, because derek doesn't know how to soften that. derek's never been all that good at mincing words in certain situations. ]

I don't think anything. [ filthy lies. ] But if he's not dangerous, then it shouldn't be difficult for him.

That hardly makes any sense at all!

[Her mug shakes and it's not because she's touching it. But it stops after a second.]

He's a vampire off blood! Do you know how hard that is?

[ that's something new. derek's eyebrows shoot up, before he composes his expression. he has to ask someone else about that, because he doesn't think asking annie herself is a good move at the moment. ]

I don't.

[ beacon hills has a lot of weird shit, but no vampires. ]

But I can't let him hurt anyone. There's hunters aboard, Annie.

He won't, he won't hurt anyone, he wouldn't do that.

[To her. He wouldn't do that to her.]

Are you sure?

[ because derek isn't, but he's willing to admit his perception of mitchell is skewed. ]

[Annie really is the strongest of the three of them, in more ways than one.]

[ because he gets it. he's annie's friend, and derek can understand the impulse to defend a friend stubbornly. ]

If I find him in person, how would that go?

[ what he's really asking is how strong mitchell is, but trying to at least be subtle about it. ]
